Thermo Fisher Scientific is hiring an UI/UX Product Engineer

About the Role

ThermoFisher is looking for a UI/UX Product Engineer to turn complex requirements into elegant, user-centered interfaces. In this role, you will be a key member of an Agile Scrum team, acting as both a hands-on engineer and a product owner for UI workflows across handheld devices, desktop software, web platforms, and mobile applications.

What You'll Do

  • Partner with end users, product managers, and stakeholders to craft scalable, user-centric designs from product requirements.
  • Design and validate UI screens and workflows for handheld device GUIs and companion Windows, Web, or smartphone applications.
  • Develop and maintain detailed screen wireframes, UI specifications, and functional documentation to guide development and testing.
  • Participate in and maintain visibility into company UxD groups for design consistency across platforms.
  • Serve as Product Owner or UI lead within a Scrum team, clearly communicating and prioritizing UI/UX requirements.
  • Write thorough user stories and acceptance criteria for UI features and workflows.
  • Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, backlog grooming, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive product vision, scope, and delivery timelines.
  • Work effectively with both local (Tewksbury) and global engineering, SQA, and product/project teams.
  • Facilitate design discussions, provide UI/UX guidance, and coordinate across time zones.
  • Produce high-quality documentation including functional specifications, UI logic flows, and interface behavior definitions.
  • Communicate complex ideas clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Present design concepts, prototypes, and workflow rationale to stakeholders and leadership.

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, or related field experience.
  • 7+ years of proven experience designing UI for handheld devices and Windows/Web-based applications.
  • Strong understanding of usability principles, UI patterns, and modern design standards.
  • Experience working within an Agile Scrum environment as a product owner, business analyst, UI engineer, or similar role.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, detailed functional specifications and user workflows.
  • Excellent communication skills—verbal, written, and presentation.
  • Ability to work effectively in both local and distributed global teams.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with prototyping tools (e.g., Figma, Balsamiq, Sketch, Adobe Axure) for wireframes and mockups.
  • Experience with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop (or equivalent) for SVG/icon and splash screen creation.
  • Familiarity with software development processes and working directly with engineering teams.
  • Experience with issue tracking (e.g., Jira), collaboration software (e.g., Confluence), and large-scale document storage (e.g., SharePoint).
  • Background in regulated industries (medical, scientific, industrial).
  • Experience with analytical technologies such as XRF or Raman, or a strong desire to learn.

Team & Environment

You will join an Agile Scrum team, collaborating closely with local and global engineering, SQA, and product teams to drive design intent and implementation alignment.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Compensation: $118,600.00–$147,000.00 annually, with a variable annual bonus.
  • A choice of national medical, dental, and vision plans, including health incentive programs.
  • Employee assistance and family support programs, commuter benefits, and tuition reimbursement.
  • At least 120 hours paid time off (PTO), 10 paid holidays, paid parental leave (3 weeks bonding, 8 weeks caregiver), and insurance coverage.
  • Retirement and savings programs, including a competitive 401(k) plan.
  • Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) offering eligible colleagues discounted company stock.
