Responsibilities
- Own and run the Functional Safety Management (FSM) system: establish and maintain the FSM plan, safety policy, and strategy to ensure compliance with relevant standards (ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, IEC 61496, ISO 10218-1, ISO 12100) from concept through certification.
- Lead hazard identification and risk assessments (HAZOP, FMEA / HARA).
- Maintain a live HARA covering lifecycle phases from assembly through installation, operation, maintenance, and dismantling, addressing RO3-relevant hazards such as instability, crushing, and impact.
- Define, approve, and document Safety-Related Control System (SRCS) architectures: allocate safety functions, specify Category/HFT/SFF constraints, and demonstrate target Performance Levels (PLr) / Safety Integrity Levels (SILr).
- Execute reliability analysis and FMEDA: perform FMEDA, MTTF_d, Diagnostic Coverage (DC), and Common Cause Failure (CCF) calculations using tools such as SISTEMA or Pascal (or equivalent) to verify achieved safety performance.
- Manage Verification & Validation (V&V): author and run comprehensive V&V plans including fault-injection, integration testing, and final safety validation. Ensure independent validation, traceability, and adequate test coverage for safety functions (E-stop, reduced speed, joint limits, etc.).
- Collaborates on safety software lifecycle: ensure software work follows IEC 61508-3 best practices (V-model, static analysis, module/unit testing, separation of safety/non-safety functions), and coach developers on safe coding and verification.
- Lead interdisciplinary teams (hardware, controls, embedded SW, mechanical, manufacturing, QA) to integrate safety requirements into design, prototype, and production.
- Interpret and critique pneumatic, hydraulic, and electrical schematics and advise on safety-critical hardware (motor controllers, braking systems, contactors, redundant encoders).
- Manage external certification execution: act as primary technical interface with certification bodies (e.g., Intertek), manage quote scope, coordinate onsite construction reviews, and ensure delivery of the Technical File and all required evidence for third-party audits.
- Drive competency & culture: build and maintain the functional safety competency matrix, identify training needs, and define responsibilities for all safety-lifecycle phases. Ensure FSM governance and independence from design teams.
- Manage documentation & traceability: maintain rigorous configuration management for hardware/software, requirements traceability (DOORS/Jama or equivalent), and “Information for Use” documentation that accurately reflects residual risks and installation/maintenance constraints.
- Facilitate manufacturability and production readiness for safety systems: collaborate with manufacturing and supply chain on assembly, test fixtures, maintenance procedures, post-production monitoring, and production verification for safety-related components.
- Manage the safety program budget and schedule; build and manage relationships with external consultants and vendors.
