Johnson & Johnson is hiring a Staff Engineer

About the Role

Join a forward-thinking medical technology team focused on advancing solutions in wound closure and healing. As a Staff Engineer, you will lead technical strategy and innovation for electromechanical systems, guiding products from early concept through commercialization. You'll work within multidisciplinary teams and collaborate with external development and manufacturing partners to ensure timely, compliant, and high-quality delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead technical development of electromechanical medical devices, with a focus on embedded systems and microcontroller-based designs
  • Design and execute lab-based research, analyze data, and optimize product and process performance in alignment with regulatory standards
  • Oversee external partners, ensuring deliverables meet technical specifications, timelines, and quality benchmarks
  • Guide project execution by applying statistical methods such as DOE and regression analysis to support data-driven decisions
  • Support manufacturing readiness by providing engineering expertise to supply chain and process development teams
  • Collaborate with clinical partners and surgeons to identify unmet needs and inform product design
  • Document research and development activities in compliance with design control requirements
  • Contribute to intellectual property development through novel designs, processes, and technical solutions

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Biomedical Engineering—or a related field—is required. Candidates must have at least five years of experience in medical device R&D, with demonstrated expertise in embedded software, electromechanical systems, and full-cycle product development. Experience managing external partners and applying statistical analysis to engineering challenges is essential. The ideal candidate is highly organized, capable of managing multiple priorities, and skilled in translating customer needs into technical solutions.

An advanced degree is preferred. Strong problem-solving abilities, strategic thinking, and clear communication are highly valued. Familiarity with financial and marketing principles in a technical context is a plus.

Work Environment

This hybrid role requires three days per week on-site in Raritan, New Jersey. The position offers access to comprehensive benefits, including retirement savings plans, generous time-off policies, parental leave, and support for personal and family well-being.

The organization fosters an inclusive, merit-driven culture rooted in ethical innovation and respect for all individuals. As part of a global healthcare leader, you’ll contribute to life-changing medical technologies while working in an environment that values accessibility, diversity, and continuous advancement.
