Design and maintain a scalable, high-quality design system as a product, balancing design integrity with engineering collaboration. Work in a remote-first setting with cross-functional teams to ensure consistency, accessibility, and long-term system health.
Responsibilities
- Define and manage the design system roadmap by aligning priorities with product needs, system stability, and adoption challenges.
- Create and communicate a forward-looking vision for the design system, securing alignment across stakeholders.
- Develop and refine component and pattern UX, including structure, interactions, responsiveness, motion, and accessibility defaults.
- Lead token strategy development covering primitive and semantic tokens, theming, density, and extensibility across platforms.
- Establish governance practices such as contribution standards, quality benchmarks, review workflows, versioning, deprecation policies, and migration strategies.
- Collaborate with design technologists, engineers, and designers to ensure design-to-code consistency and minimize system drift.
- Produce implementation-aware design specifications that include edge cases, constraints, usage guidance, and acceptance criteria.
- Work with design technologists to embed system rules into tools through linting, templates, and plugin experiences.
- Help build a structured knowledge model for the system, including rules, constraints, examples, and best practices to support automation and AI tools.
- Identify opportunities to improve design workflows, reduce rework, and increase consistency through targeted enablement initiatives.
- Implement strong lifecycle management for components and tokens, including contribution processes, quality controls, and clear migration paths.
- Track system adoption and impact, diagnose workflow friction, and lead programs that improve consistency and safe evolution.
- Leverage AI tools for system audits, migration planning, consistency validation, spec generation, and change summaries.
- Develop AI-powered workflows that reduce manual effort and support safe, scalable adoption of system changes.
- Stay proactive in learning and applying AI-prototyping tools and design enablement methods to improve system efficiency.
Requirements
- Minimum of 6 years in product design or equivalent, with experience shipping and maintaining a design system used across multiple teams.
- Solid foundation in core design principles including interaction design, visual hierarchy, and responsive layouts.
- Deep expertise in design systems, including components, patterns, tokens, governance, documentation, and cross-platform consistency.
- Technically fluent with component-based development workflows such as Storybook and aware of how implementation impacts design.
- Strong understanding of accessibility standards and their application within design systems, including WCAG compliance.
- Demonstrated use of AI and automation to enhance design quality and efficiency beyond ideation, with measurable workflow impact.
- Hands-on experience with token pipelines, including CSS variables, semantic token architectures, and related tooling.
- Proven ability to drive design system adoption using metrics, migration strategies, and enablement programs.
- Experience leading adoption through deprecation planning, migration support, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or a related field, or equivalent real-world experience.
Nice to Have
- Experience using AI-assisted coding tools such as Cursor and Claude Code.
- Strong background in human-centered design thinking.
- Track record facilitating design sprints and collaborative ideation sessions.
- Ability to empathize with diverse users, define complex problems, prototype solutions, and iterate through testing.
- Demonstrated success applying design and systems thinking to solve complex challenges and drive innovation.
