Oklo Inc. is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineer - Fuel Recycling

About the Role

Design and lead the mechanical development of advanced electrochemical molten salt systems used in nuclear fuel recycling. This role is central to creating production-scale, remotely operated equipment capable of functioning in extreme environments, including high radiation and temperatures exceeding 500 °C.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the full mechanical design lifecycle of process components, from concept through deployment, within fuel recycling facilities.
  • Develop robust, corrosion-resistant systems engineered for high-temperature operation and long-term reliability.
  • Apply design-for-automation principles to support remote handling, inspection, and maintenance, minimizing human intervention.
  • Work closely with cross-functional engineering teams to define system requirements, ensuring designs meet safety, regulatory, and industry standards.
  • Lead formal design reviews, incorporating feedback from multidisciplinary stakeholders to refine and validate solutions.
  • Create and manage 3D CAD models, detailed 2D drawings, and bills of materials using controlled PDM/PLM systems.
  • Produce comprehensive engineering documentation, including design justifications, functional specifications, and regulatory support materials.
  • Partner with fabrication vendors to optimize designs for manufacturability, cost efficiency, and scalability.
  • Support prototyping, testing, and commissioning activities at development and deployment sites.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field such as Materials or Nuclear Engineering.
  • 5–10 years of experience delivering mechanical systems from concept to deployment, with a focus on industrial or high-performance environments.
  • Proven background in designing custom mechanical systems for high-temperature or corrosive applications, such as in nuclear, petrochemical, or mining sectors.
  • Expertise in CAD platforms including Siemens NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or Creo.
  • Solid understanding of systems engineering principles and mechanical design fundamentals.
  • Experience selecting materials such as high-temperature alloys and corrosion-resistant metals, along with knowledge of associated fabrication and joining methods.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in electrochemical processes like electrowinning, electroplating, or pyroprocessing.
  • Design experience for molten salt or high-temperature (>500 °C) environments.
  • Familiarity with radiation-hardened components or remote maintenance systems in nuclear or space applications.
  • Knowledge of automation integration, robotics, and control systems for unattended operations.
  • Experience with pilot-scale or heavy industrial systems requiring high reliability and minimal maintenance.
  • Proficiency with ANSYS or equivalent tools for FEA and CFD analysis.
  • Understanding of GD&T and design for manufacturability principles.
  • Experience in balance of plant design and integration with automated process systems.
  • Participation in commercial or government nuclear programs.

Technical Environment

  • Tools: Siemens NX, SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, ANSYS
  • Simulation: FEA, CFD
  • Systems: PDM, PLM
  • Design Standards: GD&T, design for automation, remote maintenance

Work Environment

This is an onsite role with flexible work hours. The position requires collaboration at development and deployment sites, with opportunities for schedule adaptability to support project needs.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary range: $80,000–$155,000
  • Equity offered
  • 401k plan with company match
  • Health insurance and FSA options
  • Flexible time off policy
  • Competitive pay and additional benefits

Company Values

  • Collaboration: We succeed together by integrating diverse perspectives, sharing ownership, and solving complex challenges across disciplines.
  • Humility: We prioritize mission impact over personal recognition, acting in the best interest of the team and the planet.
  • Ownership: We take responsibility from concept to completion, delivering on commitments to advance clean, reliable energy.
  • Pathfinding: We innovate through curiosity and creativity, forging new solutions where none exist before.
