FORTNA is hiring a Sr. Controls Engineer

About the Role

Lead the development and deployment of advanced automated control systems for large-scale material handling solutions. As a Sr. Controls Engineer, you'll take ownership of PLC and HMI design, ensuring systems meet technical specifications and customer requirements. You'll create modular, maintainable code and support the full project lifecycle—from design through commissioning and acceptance testing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement PLC logic using Rockwell, Siemens, or Schneider platforms
  • Design and configure HMI interfaces using Ignition, Wonderware, or FactoryTalk platforms
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, clients, and vendors to align system design with operational goals
  • Review electrical schematics and produce accurate as-built documentation
  • Commission and troubleshoot automated systems on-site, resolving control-level issues
  • Support integration of industrial networks including EtherNet/IP, Profinet, and Modbus
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team-wide best practices
  • Ensure compliance with design standards, safety protocols, and project timelines

Qualifications

Candidates must hold a degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with 4–7 years of hands-on experience in industrial controls. Proficiency in PLC programming (Rockwell required), HMI development, and low-voltage electrical systems is essential. Familiarity with VFDs, motor controls, and industrial communication protocols is expected.

Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to lead technical efforts are critical. Experience managing project tasks and coordinating with cross-functional teams will support success in this role.

Work Environment

This is a hybrid position with up to 50% travel required. Engineers will work from a remote or office base while regularly supporting project sites across various industrial locations. Familiarity with Microsoft 365 tools is beneficial for collaboration and documentation.
