GE Vernova is hiring a Senior Embedded Products and Software Reliability Engineer

About the Role

As a Senior Embedded Products and Software Reliability Engineer, you will lead efforts to ensure the durability, compliance, and sustained performance of grid automation technologies, including protection relays, control systems, and digital substation solutions. Your work will directly impact the resilience of critical energy infrastructure across transmission and distribution networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Apply statistical methods and reliability modeling to forecast field performance and guide engineering decisions for energy management and protection systems.
  • Design and oversee hardware and software reliability test programs, including environmental stress testing, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) validation, and system-level qualification.
  • Lead root cause investigations and conduct FMEA and FMECA studies across embedded systems, identifying failure modes in both hardware and communication layers.
  • Collaborate with design, systems, and software teams to integrate reliability principles early in product development cycles.
  • Analyze operational data from deployed field devices to detect systemic risks and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support utility partners in asset performance programs, contributing to grid modernization projects involving IEC 61850, virtualization, and advanced diagnostics.
  • Define and track reliability metrics such as MTBF, FIT rate, and system availability, aligning them with product development and quality assurance frameworks.
  • Advance predictive maintenance strategies by leveraging SCADA, sensor outputs, and remote monitoring platforms.
  • Advise internal innovation and applications teams to ensure reliability considerations shape technology roadmaps and industry engagement.
  • Stay aligned with evolving regulatory standards including NERC, IEEE, and IEC, particularly as they relate to system reliability and cybersecurity for critical infrastructure.
  • Provide technical mentorship and training to engineering teams and external stakeholders on best practices in reliability engineering.

Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, systems engineering, or a related field is required. Candidates must bring substantial experience in reliability or product engineering within the energy or utility sector. Preferred candidates will have hands-on familiarity with protection and control systems, substation automation, and utility-grade software platforms.

Proficiency with reliability tools such as ReliaSoft and standards like ISO 9001, ISO 55000, and IEC 61025 is highly valued. Experience analyzing data using Python, R, Minitab, or Power BI strengthens candidacy. Knowledge of T&D communication protocols—including IEC 61850, DNP3, Modbus, and IEEE C37.118—is advantageous.

Additional qualifications include exposure to model-based design and HIL simulation environments such as RTDS, PSCAD, or EMTP. A Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) credential or advanced degree in reliability or systems engineering is preferred. Direct experience working with T&D utilities on deployments, failure analysis, or asset strategies is a strong plus, as is awareness of cybersecurity implications for critical grid infrastructure.

Work Environment

This is a remote position, offering flexibility while maintaining alignment with global engineering and field support teams. The role requires collaboration across time zones and occasional travel for customer engagements, industry events, and technical workshops.

Compensation

For positions based in Canada: annual salary range of $162,900 – $244,300 CAD. For U.S.-based roles: $152,400 – $254,000 USD annually. Geographic adjustments of 110%, 120%, or 130% of base salary may apply depending on location. Discretionary annual bonus is available. Relocation assistance is not provided.
