Penn State is hiring a Mechanical Engineering Designer

About the Role

Penn State University's Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is hiring a Mechanical Engineering Designer to support critical research engineering programs. In this role, you will create detailed mechanical designs and manage design documentation to help solve challenging scientific and engineering problems for national defense.

What You'll Do

  • Assist research engineering programs by collaborating with R&D Engineers and Engineering Support Specialists.
  • Participate in project meetings and design reviews.
  • Collaborate to address design, material, and component needs and help resolve technical issues.
  • Create intermediate 3D solid models for fabricated parts, assemblies, and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts using accepted standards.
  • Create 2D detail drawings for intermediate fabrication parts and assemblies; may also create schematic or bills of material (BOM) documents.
  • Perform Service Center tasks related to documentation control, copying, archiving, and database entry.
  • Utilize ARL’s Project Lifecycle Management (PLM) software (Teamcenter) to archive and manage all design documentation.
  • Maintain all required compliance training for business systems, safety, and security.
  • Build on your knowledge of design software features, techniques, and specifications like ASME Y14.5.
  • Provide regular work status updates to senior personnel and engineering staff.

What We're Looking For

  • Familiarity with mechanical systems and components.
  • Experience with layout and design using CAD software for component creation.
  • Ability to create 2D detail drawings for fabrication parts and assemblies.
  • Ability to create 3D parametric solid models which are fully constrained.
  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • For Engineering Designer - Senior Professional: Associate Degree and 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination.
  • For Engineering Designer - Advanced Professional: Associate Degree and 4+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination.

Nice to Have

  • Siemens NX CAD experience.
  • Experience with the Siemens Teamcenter PLM tool.
  • Certification or familiarization with ASME Y14.5.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office and Adobe products.

Team & Environment

You will join the Mechanical and Electrical Design Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL), reporting to and collaborating with senior personnel and engineering staff.

  • Salary: $56,200.00 - $89,600.00
