SpaceX is hiring a Mechanical Engineer, Consumer Hardware (Starlink)

About the Role

The role involves developing mechanical systems for mass-produced consumer hardware used in global satellite communications, with emphasis on design for manufacturability, reliability, and environmental resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical components and enclosures for outdoor electronic devices
  • Develop prototypes using 3D printing, machining, and other rapid fabrication methods
  • Perform structural and thermal simulations to validate performance under extreme conditions
  • Collaborate with electrical and firmware teams to integrate internal components
  • Create detailed engineering drawings with geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Support design for assembly and disassembly in high-volume production
  • Conduct environmental testing including thermal cycling, vibration, and ingress protection
  • Lead root cause analysis and resolution of field failures
  • Work closely with manufacturing partners to ensure design intent is maintained
  • Optimize designs for cost, weight, and durability
  • Define and execute qualification test plans for new hardware versions
  • Manage component sourcing and supplier technical evaluations
  • Ensure compliance with international safety and regulatory standards
  • Drive improvements in packaging and user installation experience
  • Support global deployment logistics and serviceability requirements
  • Use CAD software to develop and modify 3D models
  • Participate in design reviews across multiple engineering disciplines
  • Maintain documentation for design history and change management
  • Apply principles of design for sustainability and end-of-life recyclability
  • Troubleshoot production line issues during ramp-up phases
  • Implement corrective actions based on field data and customer feedback
  • Evaluate new materials and manufacturing processes for performance gains
  • Ensure designs meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements
  • Coordinate with quality assurance teams on inspection protocols
  • Support product certification efforts across multiple global markets

What You’ll Do

Basic Qualifications

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to lift 25 pounds and work in lab or production environments
  • Willingness to support on-site testing in diverse climates
