About the Role
The engineer will lead hardware design and development efforts, supporting research initiatives through prototyping, testing, and documentation of electronic systems.
Responsibilities
- Design and develop custom hardware solutions for research applications
- Build and test electronic prototypes using schematic and layout tools
- Collaborate with researchers to define system requirements
- Conduct performance evaluations of hardware components
- Document design processes and test results
- Troubleshoot and refine circuit designs
- Integrate sensors and embedded systems into experimental platforms
- Support fabrication and assembly of printed circuit boards
- Maintain accurate engineering records
- Ensure designs meet functional and safety standards
- Work with mechanical teams on enclosure and packaging
- Participate in project planning and milestone reviews
- Optimize hardware for reliability and scalability
- Assist in writing technical reports and proposals
- Stay current with emerging electronic technologies
- Use oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other test equipment
- Develop firmware for microcontroller-based systems
- Interface hardware with data acquisition systems
- Manage component sourcing and bill of materials
- Support technology transfer efforts
- Adhere to laboratory safety protocols
- Mentor students on hardware projects
- Coordinate with external vendors and manufacturers
- Contribute to intellectual property development
- Ensure compliance with institutional research policies
Nice to Have
- Master's degree in Engineering or related discipline
- Experience with high-speed digital design
- Familiarity with RF circuitry
- Knowledge of thermal management in electronics
- Experience with automated test scripting
- Background in robotics or mechatronics
- Use of simulation tools for circuit analysis
- Project experience with low-power systems
- Involvement in open-source hardware projects
- Prior work in academic research settings
