Role Overview
As a Backend Software Engineer, you'll design and maintain robust services that power key product features and internal systems. You'll work closely with product, design, and frontend teams to deliver end-to-end solutions that scale, all while supporting Canva’s mission to make design accessible to everyone.
What You'll Do
- Develop and enhance backend services using Java within a distributed architecture
- Design and integrate RESTful APIs that support seamless user experiences
- Write reliable, testable code with an emphasis on long-term maintainability
- Collaborate in technical discussions, code reviews, and pair programming sessions
- Improve system reliability through monitoring, testing, and performance tuning
- Leverage AI tools in your development workflow to increase efficiency and impact

What We're Looking For
- Proven experience building backend systems in Java for production environments
- Firm grasp of core Java concepts, concurrency, and service design principles
- Familiarity with distributed systems and API development
- Commitment to writing clean, well-documented, and tested code
- Ability to work through technical challenges with team support
- Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset
- Initiative to learn, adapt, and contribute to team growth
- Experience applying AI in coding workflows to improve productivity
