Lead and shape the intellectual property strategy for a growing portfolio of small molecule therapeutics, with primary responsibility for building and maintaining robust global patent protection. This role is central to safeguarding innovation across research, development, and commercialization initiatives, with a strong focus on US-based assets.
Strategic Leadership & Portfolio Management
Direct the in-house patent team and coordinate external counsel to manage the full lifecycle of patent drafting, prosecution, and maintenance. Provide forward-looking guidance on freedom to operate, portfolio expansion, and risk mitigation across jurisdictions. Play a key role in the company’s IP leadership team, contributing to long-range planning, process improvements, and strategic alignment with business objectives.
Executive Counsel & Cross-Functional Collaboration
Advise senior executives, including the General Counsel and board-level stakeholders, on complex IP matters. Partner closely with R&D teams to evaluate inventions, conduct pre-publication reviews, and manage disclosure processes. Serve as a trusted advisor across the organization, integrating legal insight with business priorities to support decision-making in a fast-moving environment.
Litigation & Transactional Support
Oversee IP-related disputes, including ANDA litigation, and manage proceedings involving patent challenges and enforcement. Lead due diligence for partnerships, licensing, and potential M&A activity, ensuring strong IP foundations for strategic deals. Supervise outside counsel in litigation, technology assessments, and FTO analyses, ensuring cost-effective and timely outcomes.
Team Development & Operational Oversight
Coach and develop IP professionals, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement. Manage budgets, forecast expenses, and optimize staffing models to align with evolving company needs. Participate in patent review committees and contribute to contract negotiations involving IP rights, ensuring clarity and protection in all agreements.
Qualifications & Expectations
- Juris Doctorate with registration before the USPTO and preference for California bar admission
- Minimum of 15 years of experience in patent law, with deep expertise in small molecule pharmaceuticals
- Advanced scientific degree in chemistry, biology, or related discipline
- Proven ability to lead teams, influence executive decision-making, and operate effectively in a matrixed organization
- Strong business acumen, strategic thinking, and experience managing complex IP portfolios and litigation
- Exceptional communication skills, with the ability to present technical and legal concepts clearly across all levels
Compensation & Benefits
This position offers a competitive base salary ranging from $308,000 to $420,000, complemented by an annual bonus targeted at 40% of base pay.
