Short Story is hiring a Staff Engineer, Full Stack (US, Canada, SF)

Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and scale full-stack applications using technologies such as Next.js, React Query, TailwindCSS, Node.js, and PostgreSQL.
  • Guide technical strategy by shaping system architecture, evaluating trade-offs, and defining engineering standards that support both rapid development and long-term scalability.
  • Work closely with design, product, and operations teams to deliver complete solutions spanning frontend interfaces and backend services.
  • Implement Figma designs into responsive, interactive user experiences while ensuring reliable and efficient backend integrations.
  • Leverage data to measure impact through A/B testing, analytics instrumentation, and iterative improvements to enhance user experience and business performance.
  • Amplify team productivity by mentoring engineers, leading design discussions, and advancing technical quality across the organization.
  • Uphold software quality and system reliability by championing comprehensive testing and automation practices across the stack, including Cypress, Jest, React Testing Library, and integration tests.
  • Take ownership of deployment and operational workflows, managing applications on platforms like Netlify and AWS, and building automated CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions.
  • Promote a strong engineering culture by setting benchmarks in performance, security, accessibility, and technical craftsmanship.
