Skylo is hiring a Senior Software Engineer – NR-NTN Protocols (L1 & L2)

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain C++ implementations of 5G NR-NTN L1 and L2 protocol components, including PHY adaptation, FAPI interface, MAC layer, and downlink/uplink schedulers
  • Develop PHY-layer enhancements specific to non-terrestrial networks, such as extended HARQ timers, timing advance pre-compensation, link adaptation for satellite links, and Doppler shift compensation
  • Enhance and fine-tune the MAC scheduler to support NTN requirements, including HARQ retransmission handling, coverage enhancement modes, and resource allocation based on satellite constellation characteristics
  • Build and maintain the FAPI interface between MAC and PHY layers, managing P5/P7 messages, slot indications, downlink/uplink configurations, and timing or error events in NTN-adapted frame structures
  • Design downlink and uplink scheduling algorithms tailored for satellite conditions, incorporating HARQ retransmission logic, coverage enhancement resource planning, constellation-aware policies, and QoS prioritization
  • Collaborate with RF and baseband engineering teams to verify L1/L2 protocol performance in both laboratory and real-world NTN environments using LEO and GEO satellite setups
  • Diagnose, analyze, and resolve L1/L2 protocol issues in Linux environments using debugging and performance tools such as GDB, Valgrind, perf, and Wireshark
  • Work closely with systems engineers to convert 3GPP Release 17 and 18 NR-NTN specifications into actionable software requirements and detailed protocol designs
  • Engage in code reviews, architectural planning sessions, and contribute to technical documentation and design records
  • Integrate AI-powered coding tools like Claude, Cursor, and Codex throughout development tasks including specification analysis, test automation, and code validation, while helping define team-wide AI-assisted engineering practices

About company
Skylo

Skylo was founded by engineers and scientists from MIT and Stanford, with a global deployment team spanning the US, Finland, and India. Together, they invented the missing software-defined network layer that turned satellites into cell towers — so coverage never drops and life doesn't stop.

Backed by some of the world's largest organizations, Skylo is trusted infrastructure for the carriers, businesses, governments, and their constituents, who can't afford to lose signal.

The future of connectivity isn't about more satellites. It's about making every network work together — and that's exactly what we're building with the Standardized Sky.
