Astronomer is hiring a Senior Engineering Manager

About the Role

This role involves managing engineering teams that build and maintain core platform systems, guiding technical direction, supporting career development, and ensuring delivery of reliable, scalable solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple engineering teams through technical execution and delivery
  • Mentor engineers in best practices for software design and system architecture
  • Collaborate with product and engineering leaders to define roadmap priorities
  • Foster a culture of operational discipline and continuous improvement
  • Support hiring, onboarding, and professional growth of team members
  • Drive engineering initiatives that improve platform scalability and resilience
  • Evaluate technical trade-offs in system design and implementation
  • Promote best practices in code quality, testing, and deployment workflows
  • Ensure teams follow security and compliance standards
  • Facilitate incident response and post-mortem processes
  • Encourage knowledge sharing and cross-team collaboration
  • Manage performance reviews and career development conversations
  • Balance short-term delivery with long-term technical health
  • Represent engineering in cross-functional planning discussions
  • Advocate for developer experience and tooling improvements
  • Guide teams in adopting modern infrastructure and observability practices
  • Maintain alignment between business goals and engineering outcomes
  • Support documentation and transparency across technical projects
  • Encourage innovation while managing technical risk
  • Ensure inclusive decision-making within and across teams

Nice to Have

  • Experience managing teams that operate large-scale platforms
  • Background in data engineering or workflow orchestration systems
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes and related ecosystem tools
  • Hands-on experience writing production code in Python or Go
  • Prior leadership in fast-growing technology companies
  • Exposure to observability platforms and monitoring tools
  • Involvement in open-source communities or projects
  • Experience with technical documentation and API design
  • Knowledge of regulatory compliance in software systems
  • Track record of improving engineering team velocity
