University of Chicago is hiring a Senior Associate Director of Development, Athletics

Responsibilities

  • Designs and executes comprehensive plans to identify, engage, and solicit alumni and parents capable of making gifts of $100,000 or more.
  • Leads a team focused on increasing donor participation and funding for athletics, deepening connections between individuals and the Athletics Department, its teams, and coaching staff, while shaping gift opportunities aligned with departmental priorities.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Athletics to meet campaign fundraising and engagement targets aimed at transforming the athletics program over the next decade.
  • Meets personal fundraising benchmarks each month, quarter, and year by managing a portfolio of approximately 120 athletic prospects, conducting 100 prospect visits annually, and securing over $1 million in annual contributions.
  • Provides regular and on-demand updates to leadership on fundraising progress and strategies involving key prospects.
  • Supervises the Assistant Director of Athletics Alumni Engagement and Annual Giving, supporting the execution of a robust annual giving and engagement plan.
  • Helps ensure the success of the Friends of Maroon Athletics annual giving society and acts as the primary development contact for coaches and athletics-related volunteer boards.
  • Plans and implements strategies for the University’s Giving Day to sustain athletics as a top-performing unit in donor count and total funds raised.
  • Coordinates meetings between prospects and key Athletics Department leaders, coaches, and University officials as part of strategic cultivation efforts.
  • Maintains close coordination with College and University colleagues to ensure a unified approach to strengthening donor relationships with athletics.
  • Enhances communication between development staff and athletics support personnel, including coaches.
  • Provides prompt and effective follow-up to prospects and donors, including the creation of customized fundraising proposals specific to athletics initiatives.
  • Enters timely visit summaries into the prospect database after donor and prospect interactions.
  • Serves as a key partner in stewarding major and planned gift donors to athletics, working with College teams to uphold strong donor recognition practices.
  • Acts as a fully integrated member of both the Athletics Department and the College Development Team, serving as a subject matter expert on College and athletics-related content.
  • Prepares content for the Athletics Department website, printed materials, brochures, and other collateral to support fundraising efforts.
  • Supports the coordination of donor events at select athletic competitions and represents the Athletics Department at University and community development events as needed.
  • Pursues professional development opportunities to improve job effectiveness, including building internal networks and connecting with peers at similar institutions.
  • Sets fundraising goals based on departmental objectives, develops strategies to achieve them, and tracks performance against targets.
  • Identifies, evaluates, and qualifies donor interests to optimize giving potential.
  • Contributes to strategic planning for the University’s most significant prospects.
  • Works independently to create communication strategies for projects, including publications and public presentations.
  • Performs additional related duties as assigned.
