AECOM is hiring a Safety, Health & Environment Specialist IV

Responsibilities

  • Assess and guide the development of a strong environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture at project sites, ensuring adherence to client standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Design, implement, and manage safety and health initiatives to proactively reduce risks and workplace exposures.
  • Lead EHS personnel with minimal supervision across company operations or project teams.
  • Identify and work to reduce workplace hazards and health risks in active work zones.
  • Oversee teams focused on detecting and preventing occupational hazards and illnesses across project locations.
  • Collaborate with contractors to identify deficiencies and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Evaluate contractor EHS plans for alignment with client expectations and applicable laws.
  • Act as a point of contact with regulatory and client agencies involved in EHS initiatives.
  • Provide construction management with timely, accurate EHS performance data, including KPIs, incident trends, environmental obligations, and metrics to support decision-making.
  • Represent the client’s EHS interests in key project meetings such as safety stand-downs, orientation sessions, safety committees, and coordination briefings.
  • Prepare and submit required reports to federal, state, and local authorities and internal stakeholders.
  • Stay current on changes in occupational safety regulations and assist in delivering foundational EHS training to staff.
  • Report incidents promptly to local and regional leadership as needed.
  • Promote safety awareness and compliance through targeted communication and outreach programs.
  • Manage EHS programs on large, complex, or multiple concurrent projects when required.
  • Support environmental compliance efforts including waste handling, stormwater controls, spill prevention plans, and air quality permitting.
  • Independently identify problems and develop effective solutions using sound judgment.
  • Ensure regular safety inspections are conducted with contractor management.
  • Review contractor hazard analyses (e.g., RAMS, JHAs, ARTs, PTPs) for completeness and effectiveness, recommending improvements.
  • Document, verify, and share lessons learned from significant and near-miss events with trade partners.
  • Advise contractors and project teams on client-specific EHS standards and contractual requirements.
  • Propose enhancements to processes, designs, procedures, and equipment to reduce risk.
  • Build strong working relationships with client operations teams to integrate EHS into construction planning.
  • Participate in client-led EHS training, campaigns, and special initiatives as needed.
  • Deliver customized health and safety training tailored to specific project sites upon request.

On-site — Herndon, VA

Other

  • At least 60% of work hours must be spent in the field conducting observations, coaching, and site walks.
  • May require travel to various local project sites as needed.
