Role Overview
Design and support outside plant (OSP) infrastructure for telecommunications networks, focusing on fiber and copper systems. This position ensures engineering designs meet technical standards, regulatory requirements, and budget constraints while supporting services such as FTTH, DSL, Metro-E, and SONET.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, analyze, and engineer OSP facilities including aerial, underground, and conduit installations.
- Create detailed designs for pole lines, conduit pathways, and buried cable systems in compliance with industry codes and internal standards.
- Generate and interpret technical drawings, loop loss calculations, and engineering schematics.
- Support deployment of telecom transport technologies, including fiber-based solutions and legacy copper systems.
- Monitor project expenditures and compare actual costs against estimates to maintain financial accuracy.
- Conduct field surveys, collect measurements, and perform site inspections to inform design and construction efforts.
- Prepare permit applications for submission to local authorities and regulatory bodies.
- Maintain accurate records of engineering documents, property data, and project files.
- Perform quality assurance checks on designs and field work to ensure compliance and precision.
- Coordinate with internal teams, municipalities, and service providers to support project execution.
- Develop work orders for routine and complex OSP projects, including relocations due to road modifications.
- Provide technical expertise on network equipment installation and system functionality.
Required Qualifications
- Proven experience in OSP engineering for fiber and copper telecommunications networks.
- Solid knowledge of engineering standards, right-of-way processes, and telecom construction methods.
- Ability to interpret site plans and identify existing utilities and infrastructure in both drawings and field environments.
- Familiarity with COE/OSP work order systems and construction practices, including road move projects.
- Working knowledge of CAD software, engineering databases, and standard PC applications.
- Understanding of telecom systems such as FTTH, DSL, Metro-E, SONET, and fiber transport networks.
- Knowledge of circuit design principles and network equipment operations.
- Experience engaging with local jurisdictions and telecom providers.
- Familiarity with the National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and related safety standards.
- Must possess standard field tools including measuring wheel, height stick, pull finder, and laptop.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience reviewing engineering work and conducting quality control, particularly for senior-level responsibilities (Level III).
Technical Environment
Tools include CAD software, engineering databases, and standard PC-based applications used in telecom design and documentation.
