United States of America Hybrid Employment

AECOM is hiring a Mechanical Engineer, Data Centers - Remote (U.S.)

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop customized heat rejection and HVAC systems for data centers, accounting for cooling type, load demands, scalability, airflow, humidity, redundancy, energy performance, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Choose suitable air and water-side cooling technologies such as fan walls, CRAHs, chilled water systems, DX units, CRACs, in-row coolers, and containment strategies based on operational needs and equipment criticality.
  • Run internal computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to assess airflow, detect thermal hotspots, analyze transient conditions, and improve cooling efficiency.
  • Perform external CFD modeling on single buildings or across campuses to evaluate interactions between mechanical and electrical systems and refine design-day capacity assumptions.
  • Create and analyze system models to propose design improvements and enhance the performance of HVAC and heat rejection systems.
  • Coordinate design changes and their impacts with other engineering disciplines and project teams.
  • Incorporate redundancy and fault tolerance into HVAC designs to maintain uninterrupted data center operations during failures or maintenance.
  • Design backup cooling solutions, automatic failover mechanisms, and monitoring systems to support continuous operation.
  • Calculate heat loads based on IT equipment, power density, growth projections, and project phasing to determine cooling requirements.
  • Plan system capacity to support future data center expansions and infrastructure upgrades.
  • Perform HVAC load calculations for administrative and shared facility areas.
  • Apply energy-saving strategies such as economizers, variable speed drives, energy recovery, and optimized airflow to reduce energy use and support sustainability.
  • Ensure proper air quality through effective filtration and real-time monitoring systems.
  • Manage risks related to particulates, humidity, and contaminants to safeguard sensitive electronic equipment.
  • Work closely with electrical and mechanical engineers to align HVAC and heat rejection systems with power, UPS, emergency generators, fire suppression, and other critical systems.
