AECOM is hiring a Mechanical Designer, Data Centers - Remote (U.S.)

About the Role

Design and develop mechanical systems for high-performance data centers, with a focus on HVAC and heat rejection solutions that meet rigorous operational demands. This role involves creating systems tailored to specific cooling needs, whether air-cooled or fluid-based, while ensuring long-term adaptability and reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform detailed heat load calculations considering IT density, growth phases, and facility layout to determine precise cooling requirements
  • Select and configure cooling technologies such as CRAHs, chilled water systems, DX units, in-row coolers, and containment strategies based on project needs
  • Design for redundancy and fault tolerance to maintain continuous operation during maintenance or equipment failure
  • Integrate backup cooling and automatic failover mechanisms to support uninterrupted performance
  • Conduct internal and external computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations to identify thermal hotspots and optimize airflow distribution
  • Analyze transient conditions and design-day scenarios to validate system capacity and resilience
  • Collaborate with electrical and mechanical teams to align HVAC systems with power infrastructure, UPS, emergency generators, and fire suppression
  • Implement energy-saving strategies including economizers, variable speed drives, and heat recovery systems
  • Ensure indoor air quality through effective filtration, humidity control, and contaminant removal
  • Support sustainability goals by minimizing energy use and improving system efficiency
  • Coordinate design changes across disciplines to maintain integration and performance

Qualifications and Experience

Candidates should have a strong grasp of data center operations, particularly the demands for speed, scale, and uptime. Experience in mission-critical environments is essential, with proven ability to deliver robust, maintainable mechanical designs.

Work Environment

This position operates remotely within the U.S. with a flexible schedule. Occasional travel is required for client engagements, project milestones, or collaborative sessions, scheduled in advance. You will work alongside global teams on complex, high-visibility projects offering clear pathways for professional growth.
