About the Role
The engineer will support electric utility planning through power system modeling, load forecasting, and infrastructure analysis, ensuring reliable and efficient distribution network performance.
Responsibilities
- Perform power flow and short circuit analyses for distribution networks
- Develop models of electrical distribution systems using industry software
- Assist in long-term planning for grid expansion and upgrades
- Evaluate integration of renewable energy sources into existing grids
- Support compliance with regulatory and reliability standards
- Produce technical reports and documentation for client review
- Collaborate with engineers and consultants on project deliverables
- Analyze load growth trends to inform infrastructure planning
- Conduct voltage drop and fault current calculations
- Review system protection coordination for distribution components
- Participate in client meetings and project status updates
- Use GIS and CAD tools to map and visualize network assets
- Support storm hardening and resiliency improvement initiatives
- Model distributed energy resources and their grid impacts
- Apply industry standards such as IEEE and NESC in designs
- Troubleshoot modeling discrepancies and resolve data issues
- Assist in developing system automation strategies
- Contribute to feasibility studies for new infrastructure
- Maintain accurate project records and version-controlled files
- Work with time-series data to simulate system performance
Nice to Have
- Master's degree in electrical engineering
- Experience with OpenDSS or similar open-source tools
- Background in utility rate analysis or cost modeling
- Prior work with municipal or investor-owned utilities
- Knowledge of cybersecurity standards for grid systems
- Experience in transmission-distribution interface studies
- Familiarity with state energy policies and clean energy goals
- Certification in power systems engineering
- Track record of delivering complex technical projects
- Experience mentoring junior engineering staff
