Cisco Systems, Inc. is hiring a Distinguished Machine Learning Engineer

Responsibilities

  • Define and evolve the technical vision and strategy for AI/ML capabilities across our product portfolio.
  • Shape and drive our AI technology roadmap with cutting-edge innovations to deliver best-in-class AI solutions to our customers.
  • Work with the senior leadership team to build awareness and alignment to accelerate the rollout and adoption of AI technologies.
  • Effectively communicate with and influence key stakeholders across the enterprise, at all levels of the organization.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the multi-functional team and promote a culture of engineering excellence.
  • Collaborate with fellow technical leaders to ensure the successful and timely delivery of AI/ML models and service integration.
  • Identify and mitigate risks in our plans and executions, especially at the intersection of business and engineering.

Requirements

  • Masters in Computer Science, or related quantitative field, plus 12+ years of industry research experience.
  • Prior experience in at least one of the following areas: deep learning, reinforcement learning, unsupervised learning, natural language processing, time series modeling.
  • Proven track record in Generative AI technology including Large Language Models (LLM), Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), Fine Tuning, and Agentic AI.
  • Experience working with large-scale production systems across model training and inference.

Nice to Have

  • PhD in Computer Science, or related quantitative field
  • Deep NLP & Domain-Adapted LLMs: Background in building and adapting large-scale language models (e.g., T5, BERT, LLaMA, GPTs) for specialized domains including structured/unstructured logs, text, and event sequences.
  • Multi-Modal AI Modeling: Strong background fusing logs, time series, traces, tabular data, and graphs for foundation models tackling complex operational insights.
  • Large-Scale Training & Optimization: Experience optimizing model architectures, distributed training pipelines, and inference efficiency to minimize cost and latency while preserving accuracy.
  • Strong Research Track Record – Publications in top AI/ML conferences or journals (e.g., NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AAAI, CVPR, ACL, KDD) demonstrating contributions to state-of-the-art methods and real-world applications.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading impactful AI product development at scale.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing large-scale, complex models and deploying them in production systems.
  • Demonstrated experience in large-scale data processing and parallel computing – GPU, multi-GPU and distributed training
  • Demonstrated experience in building strong internal and external partnerships.

  • For non-sales roles, employees are also eligible to earn annual bonuses subject to Cisco’s policies.
  • Employees on sales plans earn performance-based incentive pay on top of their base salary, which is split between quota and non-quota components, subject to the applicable Cisco plan. For quota-based incentive pay, Cisco typically pays as follows: .75% of incentive target for each 1% of revenue attainment up to 50% of quota; 1.5% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 50% and 75%; 1% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 75% and 100%; and Once performance exceeds 100% attainment, incentive rates are at or above 1% for each 1% of attainment with no cap on incentive compensation. For non-quota-based sales performance elements such as strategic sales objectives, Cisco may pay 0% up to 125% of target. Cisco sales plans do not have a minimum threshold of performance for sales incentive compensation to be paid.

Additional Information

  • Employees may be eligible to receive grants of Cisco restricted stock units, which vest following continued employment with Cisco for defined periods of time.
