Responsibilities
- Continuously improve database performance by analyzing queries, refining indexing approaches, reviewing execution plans, and using profiling and monitoring tools.
- Manage daily operations of SQL Server 2019 and later environments, ensuring high performance, availability, scalability, and security across production and non-production systems.
- Perform essential database engineering tasks such as backups, restores, environment refreshes, data masking, Always On availability groups, index and statistics updates, and storage management.
- Diagnose and fix performance bottlenecks, blocking scenarios, deadlocks, and job failures using SQL queries and monitoring platforms like Idera and Redgate.
- Take part in an on-call rotation using PagerDuty, responding to database alerts and incidents during off-hours.
- Design and manage cloud-based database systems on AWS, including MySQL RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, DynamoDB, and SQL Server on EC2 instances.
- Develop and support high availability and disaster recovery strategies using SQL Server Always On Availability Groups, multi-AZ setups, replication, automated backups, point-in-time recovery, and failover validation.
- Support the growth of a cloud-native data platform by working with AWS services such as Glue, Lambda, OpenSearch, and Bedrock.
- Apply a product-focused engineering mindset to database management, prioritizing automation to minimize manual intervention.
- Expand automation capabilities using SQL Agent Jobs, PowerShell scripts, Terraform, and CloudFormation to enhance system reliability and reduce operational effort.
- Support release management activities, including database deployments and production changes.
- Help refine and document database administration standards, operational runbooks, and support processes.
- Develop and maintain ETL and ELT data pipelines, including those built with AWS Glue, to enable analytics and reporting.
- Work with engineering, DevOps, and analytics teams in the U.S. across time zones to ensure consistent data operations and alignment on architecture.
- Partner with development teams to guide schema design, optimize queries, and promote database best practices in a distributed environment.
