We are looking for a Cloud Database Administrator to oversee and enhance SQL Server databases deployed across AWS and Azure cloud infrastructures. In this role, you will ensure systems remain secure, highly available, and finely tuned to support critical business operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and maintain SQL Server instances on AWS (RDS, EC2) and Azure (SQL DB, Managed Instance, SQL on VMs)
- Implement and monitor backup strategies, patching routines, and high-availability solutions including AlwaysOn, Geo-replication, and Log Shipping
- Optimize query performance through indexing, execution plan analysis, and wait statistics using tools like SolarWinds DPA
- Configure and maintain observability platforms such as New Relic APM, RedGate Monitor, and SQL Monitor for proactive issue detection
- Automate routine database tasks using PowerShell, T-SQL, and cloud CLI tools; integrate scripts into CI/CD pipelines
- Support additional data systems including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis
- Work alongside CloudOps, DevOps, and SRE teams to streamline deployments, manage infrastructure as code, and improve release processes
- Monitor and optimize cloud spending through resource tagging, instance right-sizing, and scheduled scaling policies
- Enforce access controls, auditing, and compliance with standards such as FedRAMP High and IL5
- Participate in an on-call rotation to respond to and resolve production incidents
Qualifications
You bring 3–8 years of direct experience managing SQL Server databases, with at least two years focused on cloud environments (AWS or Azure). You have hands-on expertise with SQL Server 2016 and later versions, including installation, performance tuning, high availability, and disaster recovery configurations.
Proficiency with monitoring tools such as New Relic, SolarWinds DPA, and RedGate is essential. You’re skilled in scripting with PowerShell and T-SQL, and comfortable using Azure or AWS CLI. Experience in regulated environments (FedRAMP, HIPAA, IL5) and cost optimization in the cloud is required. Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities are key.
Familiarity with PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and Redis is expected. Preferred candidates hold certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate, AWS Certified Database – Specialty, or AWS Solutions Architect – Associate.
