As a Back-End/Infra Engineer on the Giger team, you'll play a central role in shaping the infrastructure that powers developer productivity. Your focus will be on building and maintaining a robust internal sandbox platform using Kubernetes and Node.js, enabling engineering teams to iterate quickly in environments that mirror production.
What You’ll Do
- Design and operate the control plane responsible for managing hundreds of dynamic sandboxes
- Develop backend systems that automate the full lifecycle of sandbox environments—from provisioning to decommissioning
- Deliver infrastructure as a platform by integrating databases, caching layers, storage, and message queues into self-service workflows
- Scale and fine-tune Kubernetes clusters to handle fluctuating workloads using Karpenter, VPA, KEDA, and intelligent scheduling strategies
- Monitor and optimize costs across compute, storage, and network resources
- Configure and maintain networking components to replicate production behavior, including traffic routing, ingress management, and secure access
- Implement observability solutions to provide insight into sandbox performance and health
- Collaborate with SREs to ensure platform stability and high availability
- Work closely with engineering teams to translate their needs into scalable, automated platform features
What We’re Looking For
- 8+ years of experience in software, infrastructure, or platform engineering
- Strong backend development skills, including API design and data systems (Postgres, Kafka, Nats)
- Proficiency in Node.js, Go, or Python
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes, including experience extending it through custom controllers or operators
- Familiarity with core Kubernetes tooling: ingress controllers, CoreDNS, external-dns, AWS LBC, oauth2-proxy
- Hands-on experience with secret management (Vault, External Secrets) and GitOps workflows
- Proven track record managing large-scale clusters (1,000+ nodes, 30k+ pods)
- Expertise in cluster autoscaling, resource optimization (Karpenter, VPA, KEDA), and storage provisioning
- Strong problem-solving abilities and system design skills
- Effective communicator who thrives in cross-functional environments
Nice to Have
- Experience building internal developer platforms or Kubernetes operators
- Production use of Postgres operators such as CloudNativePG or Zalando
- Multi-region or multi-cloud infrastructure experience
